What difficulties did you face at the beginning of your career?
I struggled with having a specialty, lacking direction in my career. I wanted to be a motion graphics artist, a web designer, an art director, a music poster screen printer, and everything else under the sun. I learned to be good at a few things, but not great at any one thing. But it was that same curiosity in so many different design fields that lead me to where I am today.
What should a young designer do in order not to get hired by anybody?
Staying home, watching TV, being lazy, not traveling, not living life making new experiences with people you care about.
Are there any things you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
No. Part of growing up is learning new things along the way. I’m happy to learn something new every day, no matter how old I get. Life wouldn’t be fun if we had all of the answers right away.
Are there any rules or habits that help you do your job more efficiently?
I always surround myself with people smarter and more talented than I am.
Would you recommend some books that young designers might find useful?
Yes, here’s my list.
