Karen Goheen,
Michael Tabie
What difficulties did you face at the beginning of your career?
For us the biggest issue was really understanding the business side of things. Incorporating, payroll taxes, federal taxes, sales tax, contracts, all that legal stuff that comes along with starting a small business is a real pain in the ass. It’s that nitty gritty stuff that you really have to learn as you go.
What should a young designer do in order not to get hired by anybody?
Address an email with “to whom it may concern”.
Are there any things you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
The definition of “work for hire”.
Are there any rules or habits that help you do your job more efficiently?
Our mornings are the most productive part of our days. It’s best to try and schedule a time for emails and not answer or look at them throughout the day.
Would you recommend some books that young designers might find useful?
Sign Painters, Rolling Paper Graphics, Mastering Layout.
